Smart DCT - Decision-making tool to assist in the implementation of Selective Dry Cow Therapy

When implementing SDCT, the main difficulty is to select the cows that require treatment. Enumeration of SCC is the best indicator, however the same cut-off (e.g. 200,000 cells/ml) is not appropriate in all herds. Smart DCT can help you to define the correct cut-off for your clients' herds.

In a herd with
a high prevalence of intramammary infections,
lower the cut-off to limit the number of infected cows left untreated at dry-off.
In a herd with
a moderate prevalence of intramammary infections,
a cut-off of 200,000 cells/ml is justified
In a herd with
a moderate prevalence of intramammary infections,
increase the cut-off to maximize the reduction in antibiotic used at dry-off.
